WHILE most of the country was bemoaning England's performance in their 0-0 draw with Israel in a European Championship qualifier two weeks ago, one football fan was anxiously awaiting results from some lower level games.

Luke Butler, a customer at Ladbrokes betting shop in The Glebe, Stevenage, had placed a £2 Millionaire bet on Saturday and, having predicted the results of 15 matches that day thanks to late goals for Scotland, Bristol City, Scunthorpe and Ghana, had accumulated more than £47,000.

He was now looking on the results of Sunday matches at Darlington, Brentford, Queen of the South, Milton Keynes and the friendly international between Columbia and Switzerland to bump his winnings up to a cool £1million.

And although Hartlepool beat Darlington in the first of those matches, results at two of the other games went against him to leave Luke with the consolation of his £47,651.47.
