MEMBERS of Sandy Enhancement Group's committee went fishing for litter on Sunday in a damp ditch.

At the end of the day over 10 bags of rubbish were collected from the ditch that runs alongside Sunderland Road playing fields.

One member even managed to rescue a frog trapped inside a plastic carrier bag that had been thrown into the ditch.

The rubbish was almost entirely made up of wrappings from picnic foods such as crisp bags, sweet papers, drink cans and plastic bottles.

The big clean-up day was part of getting Sandy ready for the Anglia In Bloom competition and they are hoping people who use the playing field will now take their litter home or put it in the bins.

"We want people to keep Sandy tidy so we will have a good chance of getting a gold award in this year's competition," said one member of the committee.
