A CHARITY which has raised nearly two million pounds for Lister Hospital has given its last cheque to the hospital after 25 years.
The Lister Appeal has been run entirely by volunteers over the years raising money for medical equipment.
The charity decided to hang up its collecting boxes and hand over to a younger generation.
Last year a head of fundraising and development for the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust was employed to deal with fundraising.
The final cheque, from the Lister Appeal, of more than £19,000 was presented to Lister Hospital by BBC Songs of Praise presenter Pam Rhodes and chairman of the appeal John Stoddard.
Lister Hospital staff surprised the appeal volunteers by planting an ornamental Magnolia tree with a plaque to say thank you for all their hard work.
A Trust spokesman said: "The Trust extends its gratitude to the Lister Hospital Appeal for its support of the Lister, its staff and patients over the years.
