A vigil is being held in Letchworth in support of the fight to end suffering in Syria.

Members of North Hertfordshire Amnesty International are encouraging peaceful protestors to join their vigil which is taking place in Leys Square at 9pm on Wednesday night.

People from around the world have been holding vigils to show that they are with those suffering in the Syrian crisis with the aim of ‘turning the light back on’.

The group’s social media co-ordinator Clemens Gresser said: “The civil war in Syria just reached its fourth year, and the human suffering is greater than ever before.

“Comparing satellite images of Syria from 2012 to today shows that 83 per cent of Syria’s lights have gone out – this is not just a practical darkness, also metaphorically there does not seem any end to these dark times.

“Any peaceful protesters are invited to join members of the group on Wednesday night.

“We are ordinary citizens living in the area, trying to show our solidarity with the Syrian people.”
