Howard Garden Social Centre in Letchworth celebrated its 65th anniversary last week, welcoming members to enjoy cake and entertainment.
The day centre’s doors first opened in 1953 by Sir Eric Macfadyen, former chairman of First Garden City Ltd, designed to provide a meeting place for older people, where they could take part in activities and meet new people.
Included in the celebrations was singing and a classic car show.
A spokesperson for the centre told the Comet: “It was a great day and we had plenty of people come and visit us and managed to raise £577 towards the centre. “We want to give a big thank you to all the volunteers who helped out and gave up their time on the day.
“The classic cars went down a treat as well as the entertainment, it was overall a wonderful day.”
The centre is a registered charity, and it costs £50,000 per year to run.
