THOUSANDS of pounds has been raised by a school in a show of support for a young pupil who was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour a year ago.

The weekend fundraiser at St Christopher School’s Montessori Nursery saw more than 4,500 donated to Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre, chosen because four-year-old nursery pupil Zacharia Chowdhury was diagnosed with the disease last year.

The afternoon at the Letchworth GC school, held on Sunday, May 22, consisted of plant sales, a sponsored walk, coconut shy and penalty shoot out, before culminating with a huge balloon race.

Lesley Edwards, manager of the nursery in Barrington Road, said: “It was a very successful day, which was made possible by everyone’s generosity, compassion and support.”

Zach’s parents added: “We were greatly touched to see what an enormous contribution everyone had made, and of course St Christopher School.”
