An independent cinema was among 11 finalists competing for a Europe-wide award.

The Event Cinema Association (ECA) shortlisted the Broadway Cinema in Letchworth GC for its excellence in exhibition award, going up against industry heavyweights suchs as Cineworld and Pathé.

The cinema in Eastcheap didn’t win but was praised for its expanding range of film content, as well as live screenings of productions from venues such as the Royal Opera House and the National Theatre.

“We might be a small independent cinema but we’re punching above our weight and this commendation for our live screenings is a great reflection of that,” said Jason Valentine, general manager of the cinema.

“We’re continuing to learn about event cinema and considering other content for the future.”

The ECA conference, held at The O2 Arena in London, showcased the work of event cinema providers and included debates about the changing nature of cinema.
