Letchworth man admits sex texts to girl, 15

Barry Underwood, 59, of Eastern Way, will be sentenced later this month after pleading guilty at North Herts Magistrates Court in Stevenage yesterday (Wednesday) to sending a communication of an offensive nature.

The mother of the girl, who lives in Pocklington in Yorkshire, said that her daughter had been sent a series of sexually explicit text messages on a mobile phone which made her feel “sick to the bottom of my stomach”.

She claimed police originally told her the man suspected of sending the messages could not be arrested, only to perform a U-turn later after she had complained to her MP.

But Herts Police said the woman had only been warned it might not be possible to arrest him under the guidelines laid down by The Sexual Offences Act, and it had subsequently been decided to make an arrest after reviewing information.
