A filmmaker who has worked with the likes of Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon is premiering his latest creation in the Letchworth cinema which shaped his love of the movies.

Robbie Gibbon, who spent much of his childhood in the Broadway Cinema, is holding a screening of his short film Hand it Back at 8pm tonight as part of the Letchworth Festival fortnight.

The film was shot in and around Letchworth and has used budding local talent.

The 28-year-old said: “I spent a large proportion of my childhood with my nan on the Jackmans Estate in Letchworth.

“Regular visits to the Broadway Cinema shaped my love of cinema and eventually lead me to pursue a career within the film industry.

“Our latest short is a collaboration with an already established team and a fantastic new cast, many of who are from Letchworth.

“Our lead actor 15-year-old Ben Witham – who lives in Weston – was a real find and I believe he is destined for great things.

“Once the script was locked down I was then very keen to shoot in my hometown which served as the perfect backdrop for our anarchic fairytale.

“Sourcing local extras and shooting in and around town – it was a blast to see Letchworth really shine on camera.

“Having grown up in this cinema it will be an absolute privilege to have our premiere at The Broadway.

“I can’t wait to see the film play on the big screen with my home crowd!”

Robbie is based in Cardiff while he works on Dr Who, and was assistant editor on the critically acclaimed The Trip To Italy series, featuring the improvised ramblings of Brydon and Coogan playing hopefully exaggerated versions of themselves.

He said: “That was a great little show to be on. The conversations in real life were far more bizarre than what actually ended up on the show.

“My love for filmmaking means wherever possible I make the time to collaborate with some fantastic filmmakers and shoot my own films.”
