Will you help make Letchworth Festival a success in milestone year?

Organisers behind the Letchworth Festival have revealed it will return as a full-scale event in its 10th anniversary year – but are calling on the community to help make it a success.
Those responsible for putting on the annual festival told the Comet this week it will be going ahead this summer, following doubts about whether last year’s event would go ahead.
The festival, which will run from June 15 to June 30, avoided being scrapped completely in 2018 by reducing the scale of the event.
But to ensure the success of this year’s fortnight-long celebration of all things Letchworth, festival chair Hilary Kemp has said public support will be needed more than ever.
“Our ambition is to give the Letchworth Festival a ‘fringe’ makeover,” said Hilary.
“We want the festival to be the time of year to celebrate Letchworth and give local societies the opportunity to showcase their activities.
“We have a good team who are already working on plans for the 2019 festival, but we need the community’s input too.
“If you are a local society, club, or just an individual with a project to promote – you need to get it into our calendar now.”
The closing date for providing details of your event is Tuesday, April 30 – after that there will be no guarantee that you will be included.
You can support the festival through the Tesco Bags of Help scheme, a community grant scheme which could provide much needed funding.
“Any time you shop in your local Tesco, you will receive a blue token: which you can use to vote for your favourite local project,” said Hilary.
“The more tokens a project receives before the closing date of April 30, the more money it will get.”
This year’s festival will see the return of favourites like Run Round the Garden, a musical-themed film festival, the children’s art competition,
and Park Live – a day of live music and entertainment.
Other attractions to feature this year include the Welsh National Opera, the return of the planetarium and a tree planting ceremony to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the Letchworth Festival.
