A DROP-IN centre for adults with learning difficulties has tripled in size in the past eight months.

Jackie’s Drop-In Centre was restarted in Letchworth GC in January and since an article in the Comet in March, the number of users has jumped from around 20 to 60.

Jackie Nealon set up the centre at St Michael’s House in Norton Way South after an initial project was stopped in November 2009 due to a lack of premises.

Following the reopening, those with learning difficulties have been able to visit the centre every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11am and 3pm, to socialise and play games.

With the help of around 10 volunteers, Jackie has now extended the opening times to include Fridays in a bid to meet demand.

The Letchworth GC resident said: “It’s getting bigger and bigger.

“I just think they enjoy coming here and they love being with their friends. It’s wonderful, they are all making friends and I’m really happy for them all.

“Before it was restarted it was just a few people sitting around a table once a week but now it offers so much, we have pool tables, a music room and TVs.”

The venue has been provided by the Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation free of charge on a temporary basis, although an alternative premises would be offered if required.
