A cherished centre for adults with disabilities is facing closure unless the team can drum up enough support and funds for a move to a bigger premises.

Jackie’s Drop-in Centre – which is based at St Michael’s House in Letchworth – started off with just six users in 2012, but the interest has spiralled and the volunteers now cater for more than 200 people.

Due to the demand for the service, the Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation identified a building in Broadway for the team to move to in February, but the volunteers need to fit out the premises within a month to cause as little disruption to their members as possible.

The new headquarters would require a full renovation to bring it up to standard, including partition walls, electrical and plumbing work, flooring, additional toilets, a kitchen, a sensory room, full decoration throughout and a lift.

Many have come forward to help – including the Letchworth scouts who have offered to help decorate – but the team need more people to follow suit and help them raise the £20,000 needed to carry out the works.

A spokesman for the centre said: “Jackie’s Drop-In Centre plays an essential resource within the disabled community with people travelling up to 30 miles to use our unique centre.

“If we can’t meet the funds for the project we will have to close our service which will have a detrimental and lasting effect to our service users.

“We and our service users would be very grateful for any donations made so we can complete the project and to ensure many more adults with disabilities have somewhere to go where they can feel safe and relaxed and to develop their social skills and confidence so they can feel more relaxed within the community.”

The crew at Jackie’s have also made a video to illustrate how much the centre means to their members. You can take a look at it by visiting www.youtube.com and searching for Jackie’s Drop-in Centre.
