ALAN Mullery kicked off his autobiography at Ottakar's book store in Stevenage last week lifting the lid on life during his football career starting with Fulham and then Spurs and England.

Mr Mullery was one of the outstanding wing halves of his era and the book reflects his rise from a boy in war-torn London to the pinnacle of his professional as captain of England.

He won 35 England caps captaining his country once in 1975 and a host of other medals during his eight years at White Hart Lane, moving there in 1964 for what was then a British record transfer fee of £72,500 from Fulham.

Footballer of the Year in 1975 and later manager at Brighton, Crystal Palace and QPR, Mr Mullery writes about his passion for football; some of the secrets he has kept hidden for more than a quarter of a century and his shame at behind sent off playing for England. Alan Mullery Autobiography published by Headline £18.99.
