Match report: Wycombe Wanderers 2 Stevenage 2

Matt Ingram’s late, late penalty save denied Stevenage the chance of a victory today at Wycombe Wanderers.

For the second game in succession striker Ben Kennedy was fouled in the opposition box leading to a Boro penalty, this time six minutes into injury time.

Simon Walton, who fired home from the spot last week, had already been substituted and when Dean Parrett stepped up in his place Ingram was equal to it to deny Boro what would have been a third straight victory.

Kennedy, a breakthrough star in the second half of the season, was on the bench for Boro, but there were recalls for both Ronnie Henry and Tom Pett following their respective comebacks from injury.

It was the home side who took the lead, with Fred Onyedinma, on loan from Millwall, scoring the first of his two goals.

He had already tested Stevenage keeper Chris Day with an effort from the edge of the box before, on 10 minutes, he ran through to beat the advancing goalkeeper for 1-0.

Playing centrally, Pett had a hand in the build up to his equaliser when he played the ball into the path of Chris Whelpdale before getting on the end of a cross to nod past Ingram for 1-1.

Wycombe thought they had re-taken the lead when they hit the back of the net again, only for play to be called back for a foul on Chris Day.

Instead it was Stevenage who scored next, when Parrett’s low free-kick squeezed past Ingram. Wycombe, and more specifically Onyedinma, hit back, with the striker heading in from a corner for 2-2.

And the drama continued when Chris Beardsley was sent off for a second bookable offence.

As Wycombe pushed for a winner they were susceptible to the counter-attack.

Bira Dembele fired wide when in the box while Chris Whelpdale shot over the bar, before Kennedy was brought down in the box only for Parrett, and Boro, to be denied by Ingram.

Next up for Stevenage, Plymouth Argyle at the Lamex Stadium on Tuesday evening.
