LARGER ambulances with more room for life-saving equipment and paramedics to work in are to be introduced in the county.

The East of England Ambulance Service has ordered 160 vehicles to join its fleet.

The first wave of ambulances, 50 in total, will be on the road this month, serving Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk.

Service spokesman Gary Sanderson said the new larger ambulances would improve the comfort of patients.

He said: "Patients and crews will benefit from a revised interior fit which will improve patient comfort and also allow crews to stand upright in the back for the first time, making it easier for them to move around and treat their patients."

A further 110 ambulances will be added to the fleet over the next two years.
