There are delays on the A1(M) southbound near Letchworth and Stevenage, with a lane closed for about half an hour this morning following an incident involving a vehicle leaving the carriageway and a fire.
Fire crews from Baldock and Royston mobilised to put out the car fire between Junctions 9 and 8 at about 7.30am, and extinguished the blaze using hose reel jets and breathing apparatus.
One lane of the southbound carriageway was closed to traffic, and reopened at about 8.30am. Police are on the scene.
Highways England warned of delays all the way back to Junction 10 following ‘accident involving a vehicle that has left the carriageway’ between Junctions 9 and 8, and initially predicted that normal traffic conditions will return between 10am and 10.15am – but by 8.50am it was reporting that flow had improved.
