BEST-selling author Ken Follett has given �100,000 to Ed Balls in his campaign to become the next leader of the Labour Party.

Mr Follett, who lives with his wife the former Stevenage Labour MP Barbara Follett in Old Knebworth, was by far the biggest single donor to the Labour leadership race last month.

The donation, according to official figures from the Electoral Commission, helped Mr Balls raise �103,000 in July.

David Milliband, favourite for the Labour leadership race,raked in most money overall with nine contributions totalling over �138,000.

His brother Ed raised �46,450.
