JOBS have been safeguarded in Stevenage after missiles firm MBDA agreed a long term partnering arrangement with the Ministry of Defence.

It is for the development and supply of new complex weapons including the Fire Shadow Loitering Munition system.

As part of the agreement, MBDA has signed a contract worth 330m for the first package of projects focussed on deployment of new military capabilities into Afghanistan.

The whole portfolio of projects involved is potentially worth up to 4b over the next 10 years.

Keith Garden, MBDA's deputy managing director UK, said: "This announcement is really good news for Stevenage and the local community.

"The continuation of these programmes into their next development stages retains technical and engineering skills and capabilities in the local area which could have been lost to foreign competition.
