Jobs are at a risk at a home improvement store which faces possible closure.

Stevenage’s Homebase store, based on the town’s Roaring Meg retail park, employs 50 people whose jobs are now at risk.

One employee, who asked not to be named, said: “It will be a real shame because this has been a really good source of income for me. I always thought, as a business, we were doing quite well.

“Jobs are few and far between at the moment so it’s fair to say that I am pretty worried about what might happen in the future. I’ve always enjoyed working here, I have made a lot of new friends, but we’re not going to be able to do anything about it once a decision has been made. I think it’s going to be a real struggle for all of us to find new jobs.”

A spokesman for Homebase said: “Homebase can confirm that the business has entered a period of consultation concerning the proposed closure of our store in Stevenage. Colleagues at the store have been informed and we will be working with them over the next few weeks to support them as much as possible.”

Homebase has yet to confirm when and if the store will officially close.
