A 29-year-old man who left a much older victim with facial and spinal fractures after a vicious assault outside a Hitchin nightspot has been jailed for eight years.

Seymour Zacharia Simms, of Garden Row in Hitchin, left his victim – a man aged in his 50s – in hospital for more than a week after he was found in the street outside The Venue in Bancroft.

Simms was sentenced to eight years behind bars when he appeared before Judge David Farrell at Cambridge Crown Court.

The victim suffered serious injuries including facial and spinal fractures, swelling and bruising in the attack in the early hours of Saturday, February 11.

North Herts Chief Inspector Julie Wheatley said: “We welcome this sentencing and we think it sends out a clear message. If people are ever thinking of violence or having any sort of weapon for self-defence, it just doesn’t cut it.

“We won’t tolerate anything like this in Hitchin or North Hertfordshire. We’re really pleased with this sentence.”
