A MAN who preyed on pensioners has been jailed.

He was given a six-year sentence for robbery. And the judge stipulated that he serve at least five years before a parole board may consider his release.

Donovan Bromfield, 43, of Queen Street Hitchin, was sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court.

The first robbery he committed happened outside a chicken takeaway shop in Brand Street, Hitchin, on September 26, 2005 when the victim was a 69-year-old woman.

The second one was on November 25, 2005 when a 74-year-old woman was attacked and robbed in a lift in the multi-storey car park at Paynes Park, Hitchin.

He admitted both offences.

Dc Jon Hancock, who led the investigation, said: "This result sends out a very positive message that this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated on the streets of Hertfordshire.

"Donovan Bromfield preyed on vulnerable members of society and the residents of Hitchin and Letchworth can be reassured by his conviction. The judge stated that he intended this sentence to send a clear signal to the public, that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated.
