A determined fundraiser who has completed a series of gruelling physical challenges to raise money for charity despite having only one leg is busy preparing for his next extreme feat– walking on a treadmill for 20 hours.

Kevin Brennan, 53, lost part of his foot in a hit-and-run road crash in 1982 and then had his lower leg removed in 2011.

Kevin said: “Following the accident I had half of my foot removed. I became depressed and frustrated because at that time I was becoming a good footballer.”

It was watching the London Paralympics the year after his amputation which gave Kevin a new focus.

“I was inspired by the Paralympics – watching the cyclists flying around the velodrome,” he said.

His first cycle ride was from Letchworth to the Olympic Stadium in 2013.

Since then he has completed many more challenges including 400 laps in a velodrome and a para-triathlon, where he finished first in his category and second overall.

Kevin, from Stevenage, is now preparing for his treadmill task by training for five days a week, with walking, running and swimming all part of his fitness regime.

He said: “I have to prepare myself to be mentally strong, to train and have motivation – I expect some degree of pain from my stump and from the rest of my body.”

Kevin’s challenge will span 24 hours – he will be on the treadmill for 20 hours of that time but will be allowed a total of four hours for refreshment breaks.

He will raise money for Crohn’s and Colitis UK – a charity that is very important to him as his partner has been a Crohn’s sufferer for more than 20 years.

Kevin’s 24 hour treadmill challenge will take place on Friday, February 19, at the fit4less gym in Hatfield.
