LAURA Russell had the surprise of her life when her partner arrived with a very original marriage proposal.

Mark Wodcke rolled up in a 40-ton tipper truck at Laura's work place Bite To Eat café on Wilbury Way, Hitchin.

The bride-to-be said: "He was blaring our song, Hang on to Your IQ by Placebo at top volume out of the truck. At first I thought he was surprising me for my birthday because it was full of balloons."

But then friends and family appeared from hiding places to watch as Mr Wodcke popped up from the top of the vehicle.

He dropped down a banner reading "Laura Russell I Love You, Will You Marry Me?"

The grand gesture was followed by a ring being proffered down to Laura on a long pole as she tearfully accepted.

It was a great birthday present as she turned 26 the day after.

Work brought the couple together. Mr Wodcke is based in the Cam Centre opposite the café where Miss Russell is employed. They are planning to wed some time next year.
