CRAVEN Cottage may be one of the most historical homes in football but a group of young players are now looking to put Howard Cottage on the map.
The Howard Cottage Cougars have been on the prowl for less than four years having been formed by residents from the housing association in Letchworth GC.
It was back in May 2002 that Howard Cottage Housing Association set up and sponsored an under 8s football team after running a successful soccer skills course with Stevenage Borough FC for residents' children.
The Cougars name came about after a competition among the players and they are now proving top cats in Division C of the Royston Crow Under-10s League.
Jon Thurlow, Howard Cottage's tenant involvement officer, had the idea of setting up the team and has seen it grow from strength to strength.
"I am really proud of the Cougars and particularly proud of the parents who have taken time out of their busy weeks to help out, coach, referee and generally run this amazingly successful team," he said.
The team is run entirely on a voluntary basis by parents who have taken a variety of football-related qualifications.
Di Goodwin, another Howard Cottage resident, was studying for an accountancy qualification when she started to get involved and is now the treasurer.
The team, based at Archers Way recreation ground, is funded by a combination of grants from Howard Cottage and fundraising.
By the end of the 2006/7 season, The Cougars hope to have attained the prestigious FA Charter Status which recognises the best youth football clubs in the country.
The club hopes to expand next season by setting up a new under 7/8s team. The under 10s team is looking for players for next season when it will be moving from a seven-a-side to an 11-a-side team.
Anyone interested in joining one of the teams should contact either Jon Thurlow at Howard Cottage on 01462 683307 or (after 6pm) Stuart Marlow on 01462 623581, email firstname.lastname@example.org
