A charity shop in Hitchin marks its 20th birthday today – having raised enough over two decades to cover 42 nurse salaries, its manager estimates.

Kim Savage, manager of Sue Ryder in Hitchin’s Bancroft, said she would like to thank all the volunteers, donors and customers who have helped the shop get to this milestone.

The shop helps to support Sue Ryder’s seven hospices, four neurological care centres and work in the community and in people’s homes.

“We couldn’t have achieved this without our amazing team of volunteers,” said Kim. “They have given up their free time to help Sue Ryder, sorting stock, serving customers and keeping our shop open six days a week.

“Having volunteered at the shop myself for many years before stepping up to the role of assistant manager, and then manager, I have many cherished memories, including our summer and winter fundraisers with cake sales, tombolas and a raffle.

“I would also like to thank the Hitchin community, which has been so generous with its constant stream of donations, and our regulars who stop by to browse our selection of goods.”

The team is to celebrate today by handing out cakes instore, from 9am to 5pm.
