A Hitchin school made the biggest donation of 2017 to the district’s food bank over the festive period.

Staff and students at the Priory School were busy raising money and collecting food for Letchworth Foodbank – which has centres in Hitchin, Letchworth and Baldock.

They managed to fill a Ford Transit van with donations, and handed over a cheque for £1,356.10, beating the school’s previous record of £1,000 and 22 boxes.

Year 8 students were set the task of raising as much money as they could. To raise funds, they organised activities including cake making, selling Christmas cards, dog walking and car washing.

Rowan Scourfield, aged 12, raised £400 busking in Hitchin town centre.

The collection money will help towards costs of Warehouse rental and purchasing extra food for the festive period.

Also in Hitchin, Toad Hall Nursery also collected donations for the foodbank. Some children went along with their teachers to drop off their food donations, and got to meet volunteers who taught them all about how they can help the local community.
