Big-hearted organisers who run a popular Hitchin community hub have been working hard arranging a free Christmas get together for older people who may not benefit from having family or friends during the festive season.

The occasion – set to take place at Hitchin Town FCs Canary Club on Fishponds Road this Sunday from 12.30pm to 4pm – has been arranged by Penny Mann and her family for people who may not be able to share the joys of the season.

Caring Penny told the Comet: “It’s a sad fact many elderly people have either no family and friends during the Christmas season.

“My brother Ian Mann and sister in law Jackie Mann who run The Canary Club have agreed to us using there facilities to provide a Christmas dinner, entertainment, and hopefully gifts for lonely older people.

“I have liaised with Trudi Harrington at Age UK who has very helpfully provided me with a list of people, numbering more than 80 guests.

“I have approached several large local supermarket chains for support and have to say Waitrose in Hitchin and John Lewis in Welwyn Garden City have been tremendous, donating vegetables and crackers for the dinner.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to so many of my friends, work colleagues and family who have also helped.”

There will also be entertainment in the form of a festive sing a long, pass the parcel and bingo.

It’s not too late to get involved. Call 01462 421888.
