A costellation of comic stars including QI panelist Katy Brand are on their way to Hitchin to help celebrate the ninth anniversary of comedy club Mostly Comedy.
Mostly Comedy started on October 23, 2008, when comedy duo Glyn Doggett and David Ephgrave held their first gig at The George in Bucklersbury.
The monthly club has since gone from strength to strength, outgrowing four venues in Hitchin and taking in runs at the Edinbugh Fringe and in London’s West End.
It arrived at The Sun Hotel in January 2016, but this month moves back up Sun Street to The Market Theatre as a one-off.
Over the years, Mostly Comedy has hosted some of the biggest names in comedy – including Never Mind the Buzzcocks captain Phill Jupitus, Ardal O’Hanlon of Father Ted fame, and inaugural Taskmaster series champion Josh Widdecombe.
Heading up this month’s line-up is Katy Brand, who has led a varied career ranging from sitcoms and straight acting to writing novels and appearing in Hollywood Films.
She started performing with the Oxford Revue while studying theology at Oxford University, and after graduating she worked in TV production for five years.
Katy returned to performance in 2004 and took her first solo show to Edinburgh the next year, leading to the Channel 4 Comedy Lab pilot Slap – which ITV commissioned as Katy Brand’s Big Ass Show.
The 38-year-old’s TV comedy credits include Peep Show, Hyperdrive, QI, Have I Got News For You and Argumental.
Also on the bill at the anniversary gig is Frank Sanazi, the self-styled “übermeister of lounge” – who has been described by The Scotsman as “a brilliant and unsettling blend of Frank Sinatra and Adolf Hitler” – and the intriguing and memorable Paul Sweeney.
Doggett & Ephgrave will be hosting the evening on Thursday, October 26, from 8.45pm. The first act will come on at 9pm.
