Players from Hitchin, Letchworth, Datchworth and Welwyn rugby clubs are playing against a team of servicemen to raise money for charity Help for Heroes.

The event starts at midday with the match kicking off at 2.30pm at Hitchin Rugby Club in Old Hale Way. The day will also feature training session by the club’s juniors, a sevens game and a series of competitions.

Joe Benucci, who plays as a flanker for the club, organised the event and will take part in the game.

He said: “We have strong links to the military in this area with RAF Henlow and Chicksands Barracks just on our doorstep. I wanted to organise an event that helped raise some money to give to people who have given so much for their country.

“It should be a great day and we have to say a massive thank you to everyone who has donated prizes and the military guys for agreeing to the match.”

Other events include a bench press competition sponsored by Peak Physique Fitness, a crossbar challenge sponsored by Muscle Mania and a sausage eating competition.

There will also be a slave auction where people will be able to pay for the unlimited services of five rugby players from the club for two hours.

Other prizes include gym memberships, a meal for four in Café de Paris in London, afternoon tea at Kensington Hotel and supplement hampers complete with protein and energy drinks.

Raffle tickets will be on sale throughout the day as well as cakes behind the bar.
