Hitchin Relay Race raises £1,000 to support paramedics and cardiac unit

The Hitchin Relay Race was held in aid of the ambulance service and the cardiac unit at Stevenage’s Lister Hospital, whose efforts helped save Hitchin rugby player Simon Miles’ life after he had a huge heart attack during training last year.

Forty-three teams entered the three races organised by Simon’s friends Jake Amos and David Wardle, who together run Burnt Hare Events – with the course resembling an ECG chart in honour of the cardiac unit.

The men’s winners were The Golden Generation, led by captain Chris Fry, while the Stevenage Striders’ ladies made a clean sweep of the women’s podium.

The mixed-team winners were Two Boiled Eggs and a Soldier, led by Anna Fake.

A food stall and raffle on the day helped bring in some extra charity cash, and more than 40 children took part in a single-lap kids’ race.
