Thousands turned out at the Priory, Windmill Hill and other vantage points to watch the display on Sunday evening, which has been widely commended as a great success.

A new team was behind the event in the shape of community company Ladder 87, the Hitchin BID and Skyfiller Fireworks – and Michelle Hoskin from Ladder 87 said they were overwhelmed by the public support.

She said: “People were telling us it had brought Hitchin to a standstill, and that it was the best display they had ever seen.

“Thank you, thank you from the bottom of our heart for your love and support.

“A massive thank you also to our event partners, food vendors, security, lighting and electricity people, the fabulous 4x4 guys, all those amazing shops who sold tickets beforehand, Rob, Chris and Paul for their amazing photos – gosh, I’m sure there are 100 more!

“We’d like to thank everyone who attended and enjoyed the night, and a special thank you to all those who have worked tirelessly for months to make this event happen.”

Ladder 87’s beloved fire engine Dennis was stationed at the Priory during the evening. Money was collected to support Hitchin boy Stanley Patterson – whose battle with a rare disease has inspired the Kawasaki Kid cartoon hero – and his family’s fundraising for charity Societi.

Those enjoying the return of Guy Fawkes fireworks to the middle of Hitchin included town centre manager Keith Hoskins.

He said: “I’m delighted that a big annual fireworks event is back in town on the actual November 5 date, and thanks to Michelle Hoskin at Ladder 87 and Charlie Unwin and Colin Argent from Skyfiller for organising, and to Hitchin Priory for agreeing to host.

“Thousands appreciated an outstanding display. As always with these events, fingers were tightly crossed for good weather and although it was cold, the rain stayed away. Next stop – Christmas!”

Ladder 87 and the Hitchin BID are set to work together again on the the town’s Christmas tree lights switch-on.
