A PLAYING field popular with families, dog walkers and joggers has been granted village green status today (Wednesday).

Benslow Fields in Hitchin will be afforded extra protection, after the planning inspectorate ruled an application to name it a village green should be granted.

It follows a public inquiry earlier this year, which saw residents giving evidence.

Hitchin Girls’ School, which owns the land, was also present at that inquiry, arguing against the application.
