Dog lovers are being asked to help police investigate a serious sexual assault on a 12-year-old girl in Hitchin.
The schoolgirl is alleged to have been attacked in woods opposite Watersmeet off Grove Road.
Officers believe prior to being attacked she stopped and stroked a small brown dog.
The canine was being walked off a lead by a man in his 30s with jaw length brown hair who is not involved in the incident – but who police want to talk with.
The attack took place between 4pm and 4.30pm on Friday with Det Con Sarah Phillips saying: “This is an area popular with dog walkers.
“We believe several people may have seen the victim and alleged offender – who is known to the girl – before the offence.”
A man aged in his 30s from Hitchin has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and remains in police custody at this time.
