A CYCLIST who broke his back when he was hit by a car has completed a London to Paris bike ride for charity.

Nigel Tooke, from Hitchin, who suffered terrible injuries when he was knocked off his bike five years ago, cycled over 500 kilometres to celebrate his full recovery and to raise over 1,300 for Action Medical Research.

"It was an absolutely stunning experience!" The 50-year-old said. "My ride was a great way to combine my recovery from a serious accident, my birthday, and raise money for a great charity that funds pioneering medical research."

Nigel's wife Wendy said: "I'm really proud of him - he has worked so very hard to regain his fitness. He rode down the Champs Elysees and I met him with our two daughters. Note the champagne in the bottle cage on his bike - he didn't drink it until he'd finished the ride though!"
