A Hitchin classic car club has been shortlisted for a car magazine's club of the year award after forming less than a year-and-a-half ago.

H-Town Classic and Dub Club is one of 30 clubs – whittled down from 150 – up for Practical Classic Magazine’s UK Club of the Year Award.

The club was formed 17 months ago and meets in Hitchin’s Market Place on the last Monday of every month.

Organiser Felix Camfield-Walker is delighted that the club has been shortlisted saying: “Since it’s inception H-Town has become one of the fastest growing clubs in the country, being featured in VW Bus, Volksworld and Classic & Sports car magazines.

“Now we’ve been shortlisted by Practical Classic Magazine to win their prestigious UK Club of the Year award.

“As a founder of the club it means an immense amount to me having the club recognised at such a high level in such a short time.”

The club is very popular, with more than 1,500 members on its Facebook group.

Felix, who also owns Farley’s Hair Emporium in Hermitage Road, believes that the recognition is in part due to the club being family friendly.

“Since it began I have deliberately targeted the club in an all inclusive direction, making it more attractive to female, young and ethnically diverse car owners, groups that can often feel intimidated by somewhat cliquey and stuffy classic car clubs,” he said.

“This has also led to a large number of families attending our meets in Hitchin Market Square on the last Monday of every month.

“So being recognised in this way feels like a thumbs up from the classic car fraternity for the new way we’re doing things.

“It’s a direction that I think clubs will have to go in if they want to survive.”

Magazine readers can vote for their top 10 clubs until March 1, with the final 10 being revealed at the Practical Classics Car & Restoration Show with Discovery at the NEC Birmingham on March 20.
