Staff at a popular Hitchin town centre café say they are ‘very relieved’ after no-one was seriously injured when a car crashed through their front windows this morning.
A grey Ford Focus was driven by a man in his 70s through the front windows of Café Rouge at around 9.45am this morning.
A spokesman for the ambulance service told the Comet: “A man is being treated for minor injuries at the scene.”
A Café Rouge spokesman said: “Very relieved that no-one was hurt.
“We have a team on the way to help the restaurant now.”
An eyewitness at the scene said it appeared it the elderly driver had intended to reverse but instead hit the throttle – causing it to fly into the popular restaurant.
The bystander said: “It was so lucky no-one was sitting at the front of the restaurant, otherwise there could have been serious injuries.”
