The Hitchin branch of Thomas Cook has closed.

The store on Bancroft closed last month.

Joanna Wild, managing director of the Thomas Cook Co-operative retail network, said: “We have made a commitment to place our customers at the very heart of all we do, and our stores will continue to very much be part of the British high street and a popular way for our customers to book. We would like to reassure our customers in Hitchin that we will continue to offer them the very best levels of quality and service from our other stores located a short distance away.

“All of our staff from Hitchin have moved over to work in alternative stores,” she added.

Hitchin town centre manager Keith Hoskins said: “Always sad to see a business close – this surely a sign of the increasing amount of holidays booked by people themselves online. Just unfortunate that it’s in the run of properties owned by the Shell Pension Fund who don’t seem to have the same understanding of Hitchin or the same sense of urgency in letting their properties.”
