An 11-year-old environmentalist from Hitchin has been saluted by a wildlife charity for her efforts to protect the oceans.

Rosina Watson, who goes to Wilshere-Dacre School, has been asking cafés and restaurants around the area to ditch plastic straws for paper – and has tackled a 1000m fundraising swim to support international charity Whale and Dolphin Conservation.

Now WDC has recognised Rosina as a Plastics Hero, with the charity calling her “a shining example to other young people”.

Rosina said: “I like protecting whales because most of them are endangered due to captivity, whaling and the build-up of plastic in the ocean. They are my favourite animal and I would like to save them.”

Rosina’s efforts contributed to the Angel Vaults pub switching to paper straws.

She has so far raised £60 through her charity swim. If you’d like to support her cause, see justgiving.com/fundraising/bigsplash2018.
