Young performers will mark the end of the First World War with performances in Highbury House’s Victorian rooms in Hitchin this weekend.

A group of 50 young people from North Herts will echo the voices of the past with a series of stories of the war in the production they have created, Highbury Whispers.

The performance tells the re-imagined story of Highbury House through song, words and movement.

North Hertfordshire Music School and Goldfield Productions are have collaborated along with the students to transform Highbury House with sound, lights while utilising the original Victorian architecture.

Audiences will come through the different rooms and be met by costumed choirs, ensembles, actors and percussion groups who reveal timeless stories and hidden secrets.

Head of North Herts Music School Nicky Footer said: “This is such an exciting project for young people to be involved in.

“They have taken on the full responsibility of all that is involved in theatre production and have been mentioned by professionals – many will gain their Arts Award.”

The team have received mentoring, training and guidance from industry specialists over the last five months to enable them to create and deliver six public performances of Highbury Whispers which tie in the with anniversaries of the end of the First World War and 100 years since women were given the right to vote.

Pop-up performances of the show were given at Hitchin Library on Saturday, giving a taster of the show.

Artistic director at Goldfield Productions Kate Romano said: “Young people are naturals when it comes to site-specific theatre, it’s like a play.

“Giving them creative freedom to tell stories in their own way yields astonishing results. They collaborate, they find their voices, everyone is part of the team and the results are fantastic.”

The children have also attended workshops on some of the skills needed to run a production, including prop and scenery-making and a special make-up effects.

Performances will take place at North Herts Music School in Highbury House at 1.30pm, 3.30pm, 5.30pm and 7.30pm tomorrow.
