BARCLAYS Bank has refused to confirm or deny rumours it is to close two of its branches in Stevenage and open new premises in the town centre.

The Comet understands the bank is to close its branches in Town Square and in the Old Town's High Street, and relocate to the former Zavvi premises in The Forum.

Irene East, Barclays' head of regional corporate affairs for the eastern region, said: "We are currently looking at an opportunity in Stevenage that will strengthen our position in the town and create a better environment for both our customers and staff.

"Our priority in announcing any decisions is to communicate with our staff and customers first and until that point we are not able to share any plans externally."

But a manager at Sports Direct, next door to the former Zavvi store in The Forum, said it is common knowledge among retailers in the town that Barclays is to move there.

"We have spoken to the landlord, who confirmed it," he said.
