A public launch event for a county-wide project marking the centenary of World War I is taking place today (Saturday).

A roll of honour will be unveiled in Letchworth GC on Saturday by members of Herts at War, a project which will document the lives of soldiers in the Hertfordshire Regiment and those from across the county who served in the Great War.

The project’s aim is to uncover the personal wartime stories behind the 21,000 names that feature on more than 700 World War I memorials throughout the towns and villages of Hertfordshire.

The event in The Arcade off Leys Avenue between midday and 6pm, will provide an opportunity for people to learn about Herts at War and will include a military ancestry roadshow where people can learn about medals, photographs or old family heirlooms.

The Comet will be producing reprints of the Hertfordshire Express from 99 years ago and the day will also coincide with the Letchworth collectors market, which includes militaria and antique stalls.

Herts at War project co-ordinator Dan Hill, who is from Letchworth GC, said: “The day aims to engage and inform the local community of the plans of Herts of War over the fast approaching Great War centenary.

“This project came about from looking at the 143 names on Letchworth War Memorial and wondering about the stories behind them. We have uncovered some incredibly moving and fascinating stories so far.

“We want to bring this important anniversary into public view and provide an opportunity for county residents to become involved in – and contribute to – the project as a whole.”
