Heroic firefighters helped save a man from a burning first floor flat in a blaze which resulted in a Hitchin pensioner arrested on suspicion of arson with an intent to endanger life.

Rescuers from the fire service helped save the man after they were called to the first floor flat in Cooks Way off Cambridge Road at around 2.30pm yesterday.

A bystander told the Comet: “The fire service rescued the man with a ladder after they appeared to persuade him to leave the balcony of the first floor flat.”

A man was treated for smoke inhalation by the ambulance crew at the scene before being taken to the Lister Hospital in Stevenage.

Fire investigation officers also visited the site, along with three fire engines from Hitchin, Letchworth and Stevenage.

A Hitchin man in his 70s was arrested by police after the incident.
