The B656 south of Codicote, where night-time resurfacing works are underway, will be closed from 4.30pm today (Thursday) after heavy rain damaged the temporary surface.
Herts Highways said the road is now unsafe for drivers.
The closure is expected to be lifted tomorrow morning after crews work overnight to make repairs.
A signed diversion is in place.
