The Shuttleworth Collection continued their fine flying season with the June Evening Airshow on Saturday.
The display started with a historical pair of racing aircraft as the Pervical Mew Gull – which set a London-to-Cape-Town-and-back time record in 1939 – and the de Havilland DH88 Comet, which won the 1934 England-to-Australia race, flew in formation.
There was also the rare sight of two Hawker Hurricanes displaying together, with the collection’s Sea Hurricane and Flying Legends Mark I variant wowing crowds.
The sound of the Rolls Royce Merlin engine over Old Warden continued as the Battle of Britain memorial flight Supermarine Spitfire MkIX roared through the sky, with the display finished off by the Spitfire MkV.
The Westland Lysnader also flew, nearly 82 years to the day from the prototype’s original flight.
There was plenty to see on the ground before the flying started as ‘uncovered’, allowing the public to get up close with some of the collection’s vintage machines.
