THE green light has been given to a major upgrade and improvement to the clubhouse facilities at Letchworth Golf Club.

Work is about to start on the project which follows the successful extension of the course.

It is expected to take three years to complete.

The overall cost is likely to be more than £1m, raised from within the club, together with a £50,000 grant from Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation.

The club has just celebrated its centenary year with a number of major events including both the Ladies and Men's County Championships and the prestigious junior clubs tournament.

In all these events, says the club, the course proved an exciting challenge in picturesque and well maintained grounds - with accolades from many in the county and congratulations on reaching 100 years from the Royal & Ancient Golf Club, St Andrews, the governing body on the rules of the game.

The major developments now under way are the result of much detailed planning and are seen as much needed to keep in step with similar regeneration programmes in Letchworth GC covering tennis and other sporting venues.

The town is fast becoming a venue for sporting excellence, a magnet to all youngsters in the area who are strongly supported through professional coaching and by active member encouragement.

The golf clubhouse project includes a major upgrade to its infrastructure, its car parks, roadways and patios as well as major improvements to the appearance of the clubhouse and the facilities and environment within.

Over the years the club has increasingly provided a social venue for members, visitors and local societies to enjoy and for members at an age where golf is becoming secondary to other less active pursuits.

The club is confident that this project will not only benefit members of all ages but will attract new juniors, and members at all stages in their golfing life to join such an all inclusive and friendly society.
