HE might not be Cherie Blair's favourite person but would-be prime minister Gordon Brown has got the thumbs up from two students from Comet country.

Emily-Rose Dover and Rebecca Morley, 17, both students of Fearnhill School in Letchworth GC, presented Mr Brown with an award for the Government's donations to a Holocaust charity.

The pair are student ambassadors for the Holocaust Educational Trust (HET) and at a fundraising dinner hosted by comedian David Baddiel, made a speech to 250 people thanking the chancellor for the Government's £1.5m contribution.

Emily-Rose said: "We were very nervous but we were excited as well.

"He was really friendly. He said it was nice to see students there.

"Apparently afterwards he kept saying he was really impressed with us and we did a good speech."

Emily-Rose and Rebecca were selected from nearly 400 candidates to be student ambassadors for the HET by a panel which included a Holocaust survivor.

Their next task will be to talk to students due to visit Auschwitz-Birkenau, a trip the girls made in November last year.

The HET was set up in 1988 to educate young people about the Holocaust and the important lessons to be learned for today.

It works in schools, universities and in the community to raise awareness and understanding of the Holocaust.
