Members of Hitchin and Harpenden Conservative Party have selected Bim Afolami to be their candidate for the General Election on June 8.

It was announced last night that Mr Afolami would run for election, after long-serving MP Peter Lilley declared he would not be contesting his seat.

Mr Lilley was a parliamentarian for 34 years and held the Hitchin and Harpenden seat since it was created in 1997.

Prior to Mr Afolami being declared the Tory candidate, there were been reports that councillor Matthew Stephens – who represents Harpenden West on St Albans City & District Council – had hoped to be selected.

However, this was resisted by the party’s head office who ruled that he could not be shortlisted.
