Boys at Highfield bucked the national trend by outperforming girls.

Overall, 64 per cent of students notched up five or more grades A* to C, which was a 10 per cent increase on last year.

High achievers were Katie Alcock with nine A*s and two As, Chris Bell with five A*s and four As, Chris Moore with eight A*s and three As, James Flight with five A*s and five As and Philip Goose with three A*s and six As.

Headteacher Jane Winterbone said she was "thrilled and delighted" with the results.

She added: "We've been working very hard to turn a good school into an outstanding school and this set of results is just superb.

"Added to our outstanding A-level results, it's been a good year.
