DETERMINED thieves took extreme measures when they targeted a cash machine.

Police were alerted by a member of the public at 1.26am on Saturday when around five men were spotted breaking into the ATM using oxy-acetylene cutting equipment.

The gang struck at the Potton Service Station on Biggleswade Road, emptying the machine of cash.

The gang members, who were all dressed in dark clothing and balaclavas, left the scene in a green Subaru estate car which had been stolen from the March area of Cambridgeshire the previous day. This vehicle was found shortly after by police in Church Road, Tempsford.

The officer in charge of the investigation, Dc Phil Raikes, is urging anyone with information to contact him.

He said: "Anyone who saw a green Subaru estate being driven around the area prior to the incident or anyone who saw the vehicle being abandoned could hold vital information which may help this investigation."

Anyone with information can contact Dc Raikes, in confidence, at Greyfriars Police Station in Bedford on 01234 275357, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
