FOUR friends will be aiming to Race the Sun when they take part in a gruelling Lake District charity challenge.
The four, firefighter Tom Morey, IT manager Lee Bax-ter, facilities manager Graham Smith and technology director Sean Storey, who all live in Hitchin, will be taking part in the Race the Sun event on Saturday, Sep-tember 6, which starts and finishes in Penrith, Cumbria.
The challenge comprises a 22-mile bike ride, followed by a climb up the 3,117ft peak of Helvellyn, before tackling a two-and-a-half mile canoe course on Lake Thirlmere rounded off with a further 28-mile bike ride.
"We've been doing loads of training," said Tom who is based at Stevenage fire station and lives in Holdbrook, Hitchin, with his wife Rachel and young daughter Erica.
"We know it's going to be tough, especially if it's raining. There's been plenty of rain in the Lake District so far this summer so we're just hoping that the event will live up to its name and there'll be plenty of sun for us to race.
"We are hoping to complete the challenge in about seven hours and raise £1,800 for Action Medical Research."
In order to help them reach their target, the group are holding a boules tournament at The Highlander pub, in Upper Tilehouse Street, Hitchin, this Saturday, August 30, starting at midday. Teams of two are invited to take part in the fun and there will also be a hog roast. The entry fee is £5 with all proceeds being added to the charity total.
